Listening to oldies radio recently I heard the Coasters’ hit song “Searchin’.” The lyrics could apply to many lawyers looking for their perfect job:
Yeah, I’ve been searchin’
Oh, yeah, searchin’ every which-a-way
Oh, yeah, searchin’
Searchin’ every which-a-way
Unfortunately, “searchin’ every which-a-way” is not the most effective or efficient way to find a job – your perfect job. A purposeful focused approached is a much better and quicker process to find a job on your ideal career path.
How To Get Your Perfect Job
To get your perfect job, you need to satisfy a need of your perfect employer. Then, you need to convince the employer you can help them solve their problem. You need to persuade them you are the best person for the job.
The best way for you to get an offer for your perfect job is to act as though you were a consultant. You need to collect information and the employer and listen to what you are told about their needs. You must ask questions designed to elicit information to clarify the problem and help you formulate a solution. The solution includes you as a new employee.
The Process To Get Your Perfect Job
It is a mistake to sell your education, experience and other qualifications in the abstract. You must first discover what problems the employer has that keep them awake at night. At a later stage, even after an interview, you show the employer how you can help them solve their problems and sleep better.
This process is the same process good rainmakers use to attract clients, and Apple uses to sell its products. Don’t sell your skills and awesomeness; instead, sell the solution to the employer’s problems.
You will use the skills you developed as a lawyer in this part of your job search. Your research and investigation skills will help you uncover jobs and opportunities. When interviewing, or even discussing potential employment, act as if you are working on a litigation file or doing due diligence.
Your mission is to uncover the most relevant information about the employer and its employees. The essential information you need to propose a solution to the issues and problems the employer and its clients are facing. You also need to focus on information about the key items on your priority list and how well the organization fits your vision of the perfect job.
How To Get Your Perfect Job With Your Present Employer
This same process can be used internally if you employed, but not in your perfect job. If you like your employer, but not your job, the easiest way to find your perfect job is to follow this process with your current employer. Then propose creating a position with your employer you will fill.
Search for problems your organization has not solved. If you have the passion, interest, and skills to solve those problems, pursue it. If a possible path to your perfect job and ideal career can be crafted at your current employer, it minimizes the inevitable disruptions that occur when you change employers. This strategy has much to recommend it.
Next Steps To Get Your Perfect Job
If you don’t have the perfect job, and can’t figure out how to create your perfect job with your current employer, it is time to look elsewhere.
Your first action shouldn’t be clicking on lawyer job search sites or calling a headhunter. Your first action should be to devise a strategic plan and specific tasks to fulfill that plan. Then, schedule the action items on your calendar. You need to know specific actions you must take to get to where you want to go.
Some of you may reply, “Yes, but I checked, and there are no available jobs at any of the employers on my ideal employer target list.” Wonderful! You won’t need to fight the crowd of applicants for every position advertised. You have an open path to discover the employer’s problems and offer yourself as the savior with the solution.
The best way for a lawyer to get their perfect job is to create the job and write the job description yourself. As long as you convince the employer you can solve one of their significant problems; there will be a job created just for you.
What are you going to do today to begin the process to find your perfect job?
